The Foundation (1975–1995)
My journey with the drums began back in 1975, rooted in the excellent music programs of the public school system in Delmar, New York. By 1977, I was fortunate enough to get my very first drum kit, which sparked a lifelong fascination with the groove and the foundational role a drummer plays in a band. Those formative years provided a unique and fortunate education: by day, I was learning to read music, play with a large group, master formal technique, and handle the reading required for classical percussion; by night, I was gaining invaluable real-world experience playing in local rock and house-party jams around the Capital District of Albany, NY.
That duality shaped how I approach music. Throughout my grade-school and college years, I tried to absorb as much as possible by participating in college programs — from concert bands and wind ensembles to school orchestras and marching bands. This formal environment was a lesson in diversity, teaching me how to listen to other musicians, respect dynamics, and understand that a drummer’s primary job is to serve the song, regardless of the genre. Following graduation, I was grateful to return to the vibrant Upstate New York nightlife, spending several years keeping time for local bands and jams in the Capital Region’s music scene.
The Hiatus & The Renaissance (1995–Present)
In 1995, life took a major turn when I relocated to Hilton Head Island. As new business endeavors and family responsibilities took priority, I made the difficult decision to step away from the drums, resulting in a 25-year hiatus from active playing. Yet, even during those decades without a band, the music never truly left me; I constantly found myself tapping out rhythms on my digital kit and listening to music through the lens of a drummer.
In 2020, the time was finally right to return to the instrument, but I didn’t just want to rely on old habits or pick up where I left off. Realizing how much the musical landscape had evolved, I chose to approach the sticks with a beginner’s mind. I was fortunate to have the privilege of taking lessons from a highly respected touring professional. This ongoing education has been an incredible challenge, forcing me to break down my old technique, dive deep into complex syncopated grooves, and completely reshape my improvisational instincts.
Today, my playing is a humble blend of that early traditional training and a deeply ingrained focus on staying locked in the pocket. More than anything, I’ve learned that great drumming isn’t about being the loudest person on stage—it’s about being an adaptive, reliable partner to the rest of the band. Now that I am fully re-immersed in our local music community, I am simply eager to contribute, support other musicians, and keep the groove moving. I am currently available for local gigs, studio session work, established band openings, and regional opportunities.
